Head Coach - Mclean Cruthers

McLean has been involved in sport from a young age and went on to play for the University of Calgary baseball team. He is a Volleyball and Baseball Certified Development Coach through the National Coaching Certification Program. McLean was the head coach of the Paul Kane High School junior mens volleyball team from 2011-2016 and has been coaching with St. Albert/Sturgeon Volleyball Association (SAS) since 2014 with the U14/U15 Girls/Boys teams. Additionally, McLean was an instructor with the SAS Atomic program for children under 12 from 2013-2017. McLean has a passion for sport and continues to play volleyball year round, both indoor and beach. 


Assistant Coach - Rebecca Rubuliak

Rebecca is a current master's student in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation at the University of Alberta. She has been coaching with St. Albert/Sturgeon Volleyball Association (SAS) since 2010 with the U14/U15 Girls/Boys teams and over the years has supported junior and senior high school teams, NAIT summer camps, and Volleyball Alberta programs. In 2011, with the support of SAS Rebecca designed and implemented the Atomic program for children under 12 based on the curriculum established by Volleyball Canada. In 2017 Rebecca was the GO Early Stages Multi-Sport summer camp coordinator for Volleyball Alberta, organizing and delivering camps for children ages 6-12. Additionally, Rebecca is a Volleyball Certified Development & Trained Advanced Development Coach through the National Coaching Certification Program and plays volleyball year round, both indoor and beach. Rebecca is passionate about children and adolescents having positive and meaningful experiences participating in physical activity, sport and recreation.

There is potential for 1-2 practices the week of Jan 1st based on athlete availability – locations TBD.

Full practice schedule begins Monday, January 7th.

Additional training: Aspire training sessions will be scheduled throughout the season to aid with increasing athlete skill development.



Saville League is a series of exhibition matches that run every weekend early in the season. Each weekend (one day only) two matches are held against local teams within a 3hr window. Exact dates and times will be made available in late December. The cost of Saville league is covered in the team fees.

Saville League estimated expected dates: Jan. 5 or 6, Jan. 12 or 13, Jan. 19 or 20, Jan. 26 or 27, Feb. 2 or 3. All Saville League matches are played at the Saville Centre in Edmonton.

The primary mode of communication for all team members, parents and coaches will be TeamSnap. This app will display all upcoming team practices, competitions and other team events, and allow you to indicate your availability. It also has a roster of players and contact information for players, parents and coaching staff. At the start of the season you will receive an invite to SAS U16 Boys TeamSnap via email. Once you accept you will be able to access TeamSnap on your phone, tablet or computer. The app is free to download and use although there are now some adds that you may pay to dismiss if you prefer. All team members are required to get this app.
