As of September 21st , AT SCHOOLS THAT CHOOSE TO, a school based athletic cohort may commence for current seasons of play. This could include tryouts, practices, scrimmages, training within your building.

In consultation with a variety of organizations including ASAA, Alberta Health Services, Government of Alberta and multiple school boards, the Metro Executive has made the following decision with regards to all Metro sports/activities:

As of September 21st , AT SCHOOLS THAT CHOOSE TO, a school based athletic cohort may commence for current seasons of play. This could include tryouts, practices, scrimmages, training within your building. We will review the climate of athletics over the next few weeks and release our next statement by no later than October 7th .

As always, the health and safety of the student athletes and coaches is our priority therefore a gradual start up is the preference. We want to work toward bringing back the physical and mental health benefits of sport and physical activity in the safest way possible.

Each school will choose what is best for their own building. A new athletic cohort must follow all required guidelines (ie. under 50 participants*) by the Government of Alberta (GOA) around sports cohorts, in conjunction with any school jurisdiction rules or individual school guidelines. *Coaches, staff and officials who primarily interact with individuals or teams at a distance of 2 metres or greater do not need to be counted as part of the cohort. These individuals are required to wear a mask and perform proper hand hygiene if it becomes necessary to temporarily interact with cohorting participants at a distance of less than 2 metres.

Please refer to the following resource below for all relevant information and expectations with regards to the relaunch of school athletics. Guidance for Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation – Stage 2

Latest update (September 3) discusses Cohort Participation and is relevant to high school athletics; Metro is recommending that schools, coaches, students and families try to limit the number of cohorts/mini-leagues they belong to

We will continue to provide information as it becomes available and will send further detailed information to schools directly.
